Gaurii Manochaa opens up about reality TV, self-confidence and lessons from ‘We Got You Girl’

Mumbai: Powerlifter Gaurii Manochaa, who recently appeared on Amazon Prime’s reality show We Got You Girl, opened up about her experience of being on reality television, facing the cameras as her real self and the things she learned during her time on the show. From discovering her sense of humour to learning the importance of being original and confident, Gaurii revealed how the experience gave her an opportunity to understand herself better.

Speaking about how much of reality television is actually real, Gaurii believes that while the emotions and reactions are genuine, the situations are often created to bring out certain responses from the contestants. She explained, “According to me, reality shows are real, but the creatives and producers create certain circumstances where you end up taking your anger out. Whether it is Lock Upp or Bigg Boss, such situations can create misunderstandings. So, while the emotions are real, sometimes the circumstances are created in a way that brings those emotions out.”

Being herself in front of cameras was another challenge for Gaurii. Unlike a scripted show, reality television requires contestants to constantly put their real personality forward, something she admits was not easy initially. “Yes, it was difficult because you have to show your real personality to the camera. You cannot really hide who you are. But I opened up well, and people appreciated it,” she said.

Interestingly, her time on the show also helped Gaurii discover a side of herself that she had almost forgotten about. She realised that she had a strong sense of humour and enjoyed being in a relaxed environment with the other women. “I discovered that my sense of humour is really good. I had actually forgotten that. There were moments when I completely forgot that the camera was rolling because the environment was so friendly. I was just being myself and enjoying the moment,” she shared.

For Gaurii, the biggest challenge was not necessarily the cameras but travelling to Mumbai for the shoot for the first time. Coming from a different environment, the experience was new for her, while her parents were naturally concerned about her safety. “The challenge was going to Mumbai for the shoot for the first time. My parents mainly wanted to make sure that everything was safe. It was a new experience for me, and their concern was understandable,” she revealed.

The show also gave Gaurii an opportunity to interact with different women and learn from their personalities and experiences. For her, one of the biggest lessons was the importance of remaining authentic while also being respectful towards others. “From the other women, I have learned that you have to be original. You should have good manners, be a good listener and there should always be a smile on your face. I think these are very simple things, but they can make a big difference in how people see you,” she said.

Gaurii also believes that self-confidence comes from doing things that genuinely make you happy rather than constantly worrying about what others think. Sharing her advice with women who struggle with confidence, she said, “Do an activity that you are interested in. If you enjoy something, just go for it. There is nothing to fear about. When you start doing something you love, your confidence automatically starts building.”

She also spoke candidly about an insecurity she has learned to embrace. As someone who has always been associated with fitness and powerlifting, changes in her body have been something she has had to accept. “One insecurity is that I have gained weight, and I know I have to lose it. But I have also learned to accept myself. I know that if I want to work on it, I can, but I don’t think it should stop me from being confident in myself,” Gaurii concluded.
